We would like to say a big well done to Owen Robb; who with the help of your votes has scooped £1000 towards his dream roadtrip in our Christmas competition! After a closely contested voting battle (only 36 votes separated the top 2) the reality of his Roadtrip to Worthersee can start to set in.

We broke the news to Owen yesterday, and he commented he’d better get on with his project!
Owen, an engineer by trade, explains more, “I picked up the shell and 2 trailer loads of parts as an unfinished project and have spent the last two years cutting out rust and welding it back up. It is a big bumper model Mk2 Golf in Oak Green and came with a nice original Recaro interior. I’m currently arranging to get the shell fully resprayed inside and out. The subframe and rear axle have been powder coated and I have been collecting bits for a while, so it should come together quickly.” His Silver Mk2 GTI stands by as a back up, in case the time runs out!

Wanting to know a little bit more about our winner, we asked a few more questions.

How long have you been into VWs? “I started getting interested in VWs about 9 years ago when my best mate Andy introduced me to Golf+ and PVW. Things quickly escalated from collecting a few mags, to picking up my first car and project which was the silver Golf Mk2 GTI I sent pictures of. I rebuilt it and had it re-sprayed and back on the road for my final term at high school. That was my daily driver for 7 years until I decided to get something more reliable (Golf Mk4 Anniversary).”

Do you attend many shows, UK or abroad, Do you have a favourite?

“Being up in Aberdeenshire makes most shows a bit of a journey, but I usually go to ScottishVAG and Cleanfest which started last year. I also went to Edition 38 and Dubshed last year, Edition 38 was incredible, but my favourite show has to be MIVW in Holland. I went back in 2010, and have never seen anything like it before. They really know how to set the bar in mainland Europe.”

So, what are you most excited about with your Road Trip to Worthersee? “I am most excited about getting off the ferry and driving through Europe in a freshly built Mk2. I cant wait to get to Austria on a sunny summer’s day and drive about with the windows down, surrounded by incredible scenery with my girlfriend; Jessica is also excited to finally get behind the wheel of a Mk2”

And nervous about?!  “I guess I am most nervous about reliability. The furthest I have been in a Mk2 is Aberdeen to Glasgow, so driving to Austria will be a real test for the car. More than that, I am worried about getting the project completed on time. I am currently getting the car ready for a full re-spray, so hopefully I can get everything back together smoothly enough once I get the shell back.”

We decided not to keep Owen any longer, clearly he has some work to do; either way he should be heading to Worthersee in a tasty Mk2 this May safe in the knowledge we’ll be picking up the bill for the first £1000 he spends!
