Ultimate Dubs

Telford once again played host to Ultimate Dubs, an indoor show which gets bigger, better and a bit more outdoor each year! Having attended the last 5 previously, this year was arguably my favourite, but in fairness none of them were bad!

IMG_1808With a few tweaks to the already proven plan, the organisers opened the doors on Saturday evening for keen show goers to check out cars, chat with friends and exhibitors not to mention capture a camera’s worth of photos before the masses arrive the following day.

Having met at VW Heritage HQ at 7.30am, driving to Telford, setting up and the show opening 5-9pm, Saturday had been a long day. The only downside with the evening opening was trying to find dinner at 9.30 at night. We decided (probably wrongly) a walk to town for McDonald’s would be good; we took a few wrong turns, but it rewarded well in the end!

For those who like a drink, or just a car flavoured chin wag, the hotel bars are the place to be. Talk goes on till 3am for those who don’t have an early start. For the traders amongst them, an early night is the sensible option, plus the breakfast buffet beckons before we start again!

Sunday morning rolled into Sunday afternoon almost seamlessly, show goers flooded the halls from opening (not to mention blocking the road network locally) and stayed at the show till gone closing; this I expect had something to do with the stunning weather. Huddles of friends sat on the grass around the car parks, some enjoying the rays, others struggling with a hangover from a messy night in the hotel bar.

Trophies are a big part at every show these days and the weekend finishes on a high for the winners of the coveted “best…” awards.  Here’s a quick run down..  Car of the show was awarded to a rather special Green Mk1 Scirocco, sporting a carbon clad turbo’d 16v motor.

Best Wheels went to these custom made Ronal Teddy bear split rims, which happened to adorn the trophy magnet Mk1 Polo belonging to James McCafferey, he also scooped Best Polo. Best Mk1 Golf was taken deservedly by this R32 engined beauty, we’re pretty sure it picked up best paint too.

Picking up best Corrado was this OEM+ VR6 model, so clean and understated – we loved it! Best Mk2 went to the Red Mk2 20V of Phil Barlow, and best Rallye was taken by JTechs Grey example below. Congratulations are also in order for the Mk1 Golf owners club who picked up best club stand – well done guys!

It was no real suprise that the best Aircooled award went to the Gonzoline Volksrod, this car has been taking the watercooled scene by storm, after picking up best of show at Edition 38 and being awarded Car of the year by PVW magazine.

If we weren’t already in the mood for shows, and enthused to get our cars back out of storage, then this show changed it for sure. A huge thanks to the weather, the sun has a great effect on people, and after a miserable few months it was just what we needed! It’s now full steam ahead till the next big one for us; the Volksworld Show at Sandown Park in 2 weeks time.

If you enjoyed this show, and like your VWs of an aircooled persuasion you would be mad to miss it!

See you there!

Andy
