Is this the best VW Split Bus ever?

As desirable VW Split Buses go, a 23-window with factory sunroof and Safari opening front windows has surely got to be right up there. If you agree, this meticulously restored 1960 example up for grabs at Oldbug.com will definitely be your dream vehicle. The only stumbling block as far as we can see is the suitably exclusive price tag…

The Bus was ordered in L53 Sealing Wax Red and L472 Beige, a classic colour combo that still looks totally stunning, and came with a variety of interesting factory options including a rare ‘ambulance’ step for the rear, a factory Golde full length sunroof and an ultra rare Eberspacher gas heater.

Considering that the opening Safari windows and sun roof were primarily warm climate options, the original owners obviously intended to do some serious travelling. Being a nine-seater with a full width bench at the front, perhaps it was owned by a big family will plans to set off on a worldwide journey of exploration together. Who knows…

One thing for certain is that this is one of the best restored Buses we’ve seen. The attention to detail throughout is nothing less than incredible and if there was a damaged panel or rust, the area has completely repaired. In fact, it’s probably better than when it left the factory.

Incredibly, though, and this is something that will undoubtedly provide inspiration to any tatty Bus owner out there, it wasn’t always like this – just check out the ‘before’ picture below. It had been resprayed green when discovered in a totally dilapidated state in Texas before being media blasted, stripped and totally rebuilt.

So, what’s a Bus like this worth? Well, according to the seller in sunny southern California – a cool $175,000 or roughly £135,000 if you do the conversion into Sterling. As the advert on Oldbug.com rightly says, “you may find a cheaper example out there, but finding a nicer one will not be an easier task…”
