At VW Heritage we’re into weird and wonderful VWs and this ‘Thing’ – which is a cross between a Split window bus, a Baja and a truck – certainly grabbed our attention when we saw it…
It’s for sale at Karmann Konnection for £7,995 and as far as they know, it was created in the US back in the late 1960s or early 1970s. It has a 1500cc Type 1 engine and comes MoT’d and UK registered, so it’s ready to drive away!
The passenger compartment itself is thought to be based on a late Fifties single cab split window bus, but the rest of the bodywork is entirely custom fabricated. By the looks of it those squared off front wings would give lots of clearance should you wish to indulge in any off-road shenanigans – and we love the bohemian wooden front nerf bars. All very Sixties beach culture…
The back end looks reminiscent of a classic Ford Bronco, but again we suspect that everything here is entirely bespoke, and the rear tyres are massive. Either way, it looks solid and relatively free from serious rot and with a bit of a spruce up it would make an excellent summer plaything or retro work tool. Moreover, with its sloping front headlamps, domed hubcaps and intriguing retro feel it’s brimmed full of period charm.
Inside, as you might imagine, you could easily think you were at the wheel of an early bus. And you’ll need to check the regulations here, but the full width bench seat looks like it would provide ample room for three abreast seating…
As head-turners go, we reckon this ‘Thing’ could cause quite a stir at a VW show – and as a day-to-day driver with its pick up rear end could actually prove pretty useful. One thing’s for sure, it’s certainly a one off…
