VW Mk2 Golf GTi bargain

The Mk2 Golf is gaining popularity by the day and if you find a good one, despite now being a true classic, it’s still easily capable of providing solid, reliable everyday transport.

The challenge, of course, is finding an original unmolested example – one that hasn’t had the life wrung out of it by a succession of skinflint boy racer owners. Well, we think we’ve spotted the ideal possible candidate. And get this, it’s a 1991 GTi in desirable Tornado Red and it’s a three owner from new with 66,000 miles on the clock…

It’s being sold by a Midlands based independent called Shocars and going by what they told us, it’s a totally original car with a fully stamped service book and lots of history. In fact, despite the wonderfully low mileage, it seems the pristine Golf is actually well travelled…

Belonging to two ladies originally, who purchased it new from Volkswagen main dealer Coachcraft in Stourbridge, it belonged to a gent who emigrated to Canada. The car was duly crated up and went with him and he even attended a show, where it won a trophy in the concours competition! Alas, he had to return to the UK, and not wanting it left behind, the Golf once again was loaded into a crate and made its way across the ocean back to these shores.

From what we can see in the photos, it looks incredibly original and the fact that it’s a three door with a factory fit steel sunroof and mint looking BBS alloys adds to its desirability. There’s even the original space saver tyre in the boot (complete with jack and wheel brace) as well as factory option VW rubber mats front and back which have helped keep the carpet in good nick. The supplying dealer sticker in the rear window is a nice touch and from the photos the paintwork all looks good. It’s a pity the original stereo’s not in the dash, especially given that we can see the optional cassette holder in the centre console, but perhaps we’re just nit picking and finding the right period audio wouldn’t be too difficult…

It’s priced at £6,995 – which we don’t think is bad given that low mileage three-door GTis like this don’t tend to come up for sale very often – or hang around all that long. It would be fun to buy it, do the few odd jobs like replace the missing front seat release knobs, get it up to concours standard – then just use it as you would a brand new car.
