Boris wants classics out of London!

Classic cars could be banned from central London if new rules put forward by the capital’s mayor, Boris Johnson, get the nod of approval. Yes, the shocking news, which would effect not only owners and classic car businesses but also organisers of events such as the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run and the Regent Street Motor Show follows an announcement last year of the Mayor’s aim for a central London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).

Although the Mayor’s proposal isn’t likely to enter the consultation stage until 2015, the Royal Automobile Club, Britain’s oldest and most influential motoring organisation, has wasted no time wading in, sleeves rolled up in anticipation of the likely scuffle between the men in suits and historic car owners. Having already had discussions with the Mayor’s office, however, the general feeling is that while it’s recognised that classic vehicles only contribute a tiny proportion of total vehicle emissions, there may well be little anyone can do to combat European legislation made in Brussels. And indeed, if exclusions aren’t made, everyone will be obliged to comply with the new laws which, if passed, will roll out in 2020.

A soon to be sight of the past? We hope not!

Even if exemptions are made, the worry for Dub fans in particular is the likely age cut off date for vehicles not permitted to enter the eight square miles of London’s financial and business district. With the political weight behind the well-heeled Veteran car movement, we doubt there will be the same leniency shown to clattering air-cooled VWs or raucous Golfs from the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s.

If Boris gets his way classics will become purely exhibits, unable to be driven in central London.

If, like us, you feel strongly that classics should stay in the capital, make your opinion known by completing the Classic & Sportscar petition here.

    1. That’s the fear. We’ll keep everyone updated but these things have a habit of slipping through the rule books without anyone really noticing!
