Uttoxeter Racecourse played host to another Annual Gathering for the Mk1 Golf Owners Club over the weeknd of 27-28th July. It sounds great, and great it was! I took a trip along to see what goes on, and just how many people still enjoy the first generation Golf.
The answer is lots! There were loads and loads of Mk1 Golfs in both tin-top and cabriolet ‘guise – not to mention a handful of Caddys, a couple of Sciroccos and a few Mk2s that snuck in under the radar! There must of been over 100 Mk1 Golfs there!
I could dampen this story down with mention of the biblical rain storm that drenched all and sundry on Saturday night, but this shouldn’t distract from the fact this was a great show. Well organised, with a laid back attitude. Music filled the air, but didn’t deafen – perhaps this is a sign of middle age creeping in; it was much appreciated all the same!
Owners of this classic model, whether they were standard or modified, in show room condition or barely scraping their MOT test were as friendly as each other, and happy to talk all things Golf for as long as you could spare, which was great, as I could do the same!

If you have a Mk1 Golf be sure to check out the owners club www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk where there is a wealth of knowledge, and a bunch of very nice people too!
Stay tuned for the Mk1 Golf Catalogue too.. it will be done soon-ish!

Thanks for those kind words there Andy.
The committee work very hard to bring a funfilled weekend to our guests and traders alike.
The rain was bad wasn’t it??!! But I think that it just added to the atmosphere and inproved the fancy dress attendance at ‘early doors’.
You and the team are more than welcome next year to the clubs’ big 10th anniversary bash.
cheers
