Up for a Challenger?

We’ve featured a raft of VW-based ‘specials’ on the blog recently and this ultra rare gullwing Challenger Charger gives enthusiasts yet another opportunity of owning a vehicle with out-of-this-world looks but down-to-earth running costs.

Based on a Beetle chassis, the Charger’s 2+2 format means there’s room for two children in the back as well as space for luggage under the bonnet so it’s a lot more practical than some of the sporty Volkswagen-based variants we’ve seen.

The kit was sold originally for £895 plus VAT, with the base kit including a double-skinned bodyshell, bonnet, engine cover, headlight covers, instrument console and doors. Customers had to add all the other bits, like the seats, side windows, bumpers and detachable inner rear wheel arches when funds allowed. A boot mounted spoiler also appeared on the ‘options’ list – and this one has it fitted.

Incidentally, the front windscreen is taken from a MkII Cortina, while the steeply raked rear screen has been donated from a Citroën GS. As for the side windows, well, they are simply a work of art and typical of the ’70s era when this kit was conceived.

The shining red example for sale here on ebay is based on a 1967 platform and, unusually, it comes complete with an MoT which is valid until February 2017 – so you can drive it away!

interior

It’s all there and it looks great on those suitably period looking Wolfrace style alloys which set the car off perfectly. According to the seller, the bodywork’s had a fair bit of work done to it recently and it certainly looks in good nick. Which just leaves the interior, which could easily be smartened up with a pair of period bucket seats and a decent carpet set or full retrim.

Meanwhile the engine looks well cared for, but the vendor says because it has covered so few miles in recent years, it could probably do with a service. Again, no real hardship given the low cost of service items for the venerable Beetle engine.

We love it – and as we write, it had only bid up to £1650, making it a bit of a bargain we’d say. If you’re up for a Challenger, you’ll need to move fast as there’s not that long to run on the auction.

Happy bidding!
