'Dead' cool!

Not for a moment wishing to sound at all morbid, we’re all destined to shuffle off this mortal coil one day, to meet our maker and go knock, knock, knocking on heaven’s door – and when we do, what better to do it than in a VW-themed hearse? Here are just some of the ‘dead cool’ options available…

Clare Brookes and Michelle Orton run Midlands-based Volkswagen Funerals who offer a fleet of buses for personalised VW themed funerals, including a unique Type 26 coachbuilt white ’72 bay window hearse, a two-tone silver ’65 splitscreen hearse and a ’67 splitscreen bus for family members. For big send offs, they also offer a silver T5 minibus for mourners…

Alternatively (in fact, very alternatively!), you can arrive at your final resting place in style with a Bury-base outfit called Your Chariot who run a VW-powered hearse trike. It’s quite a machine and perfect for those who have a shared interest in VWs and motorbikes! Judging by the exhaust system we suspect it’s likely to make quite a racket as it enters the dead centre of town!

Finally, check out Retro Farewell’s Facebook page. Based in the north east, again you can go to meet your maker in style in a white Bay window bus hearse.

As for Bug lovers, we drew a bit of a dead end – although we did find this grainy image of a Beetle hearse… Again, it looks like a custom coachbuilt affair – but whether it’s still in use or whether it’s been left to Rust in Peace remains unknown…
